I am a Silicon Valley based software engineer at a social media company by day and artist by night. My focus is on acrylic painting, with some dabbling in drawing and photography.
Naturally I spend most of my day engaged in the world of social media. I realize that social media simultaneously connects us and alienates us from our friends. We gain a quick glimpse of their lives but do we see them for who they are? Engaging in social media makes us both the viewer and subject, opening up the possibilities of being understood and also misunderstood, along with understanding and misunderstanding others.
I explore this dichotomy by painting, the means through which I contemplate art as an experience for both the creator and viewer. I paint in order to explore my own feelings of isolation in a society where we are superfically connected through technology like social media but also alienated. My paintings depict lost individuals surrounded by strange environments, either showing their vague silhouettes or concealing their faces. I hope these paintings encourage the viewer to try to empathize with these figures and think about the aspects of themselves that are hidden from the gaze of the public, similar to how none of my paintings clearly show the faces of the subjects.
